Year 4 Student
Having moved house from a different part of the country to the Midlands in 2022, My son with ASD was placed in a SEN School. It soon became apparent that the school was not a good fit as he became increasingly distressed, unhappy and started refusing to go to School. In March of 2024, I made the decision to pull him out of school with the hope that a new placement will be secured for him within a few weeks. One year after my son stopped going to school, there was no placement due to lack of places. My son became withdrawn, shying away from social situations and refusing to go out for activities. The LA offered and SEIN came onboard.
Emma from SEIN came with a lot of resources, carried out assessments, observed and interacted with my son with a very gentle touch to deliver sessions via staff. By interacting with a few staff members and going out in the community to learn, my son has gained his confidence back , no longer withdrawn and interacts better with people. SEIN has also been helpful by initiating contacts and facilitating the transition process with the new school that my son will be starting come September 2025.
Emma has been very proactive by coordinating and drawing support from other agencies involved with my son.
In addition, the sessions and trips to the community have afforded me necessary breaks and time for me and other members of my family.
B has built relationships with staff members. He often looks forward to staff arriving when I tell him to get ready to go out. He will play hide and seek when staff arrive before he leaves with them, give hi five to a staff member on arrival and at the end of the session.
I feel B and I will be loosing a support system that has helped us both. It is a shame that the sessions will not extend into the school holidays and I worry that B may regress.
I'd like to say a big thank you to Emma and her team for her passion, kindness, warmth, helpful and lovely support that B and I have received from SEIN.
Many Thanks,
Janet
